Charity League gearing up for weekend Poker Run
Published 3:03 pm Wednesday, August 12, 2020
Boating residents of the Selma – Dallas County area will have a unique opportunity to both have a good time on the Alabama River and support a worthwhile cause this weekend.
The Selma Charity League will once again host the “Summer Fun Poker Run” on Saturday, August 15.
This year’s affair marks the second Summer Fun Poker Run that the Selma Charity League has thrown, and according to Selma Charity
League Spotlight Chair Ginny Radford, the organization is really looking forward to Saturday’s festivities.
“We heard a lot of positive feedback from everyone that participated last year,” said Radford. “We had so many people asking if we were going to do it again this year, so we’re really excited for this weekend.”
To win the $500 prize at the Summer Fun Poker Run, contestants must visit four of five stops along the river including Steve and Rachel Todd’s Landing from noon – 1:30 p.m., Kaylon and Shanna Cole’s Dock from 3 – 4 p.m., Lowell Butt’s Sandbar from 2 – 3:30 p.m., Butch and Beth Wilson’s Dock from 2 – 4 p.m., Schaffer and Ann Reid’s Landing from 4 – 5:30 p.m. before finishing up at The Sandbar from 6:30 – 7 p.m.
At each stop on contestants will draw a card and have it logged by a Selma Charity League Member, creating a poker hand after all the stops have been visited, at the end of the day the highest hand will take home the prize.
Due to COVID-19, Radford said this year’s poker run would be contactless, with charity league members and participants drawing cards and keeping track of their hands via smartphone.
Registration begins at The Sandbar at 11 a.m. The cost is $20 per hand of poker or $50 for three hands.
Proceeds collected from the event will benefit scholarship funds for The Distinguished Young Women of Dallas County.
“It’s great that we were able to get together and figure out a way to put this together with everything that’s going on,” said Radford. “This will be a fun event for everyone in town and hopefully we’ll raise some money in the process.”
